Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
This year marks DGS' 60th Anniversary. We were founded in 1953.
What is your primary product or service?
Delaware Guidance Services provides quality mental health services for children and youth and their families. We believe that all children have a right to good mental health and should have access to quality therapeutic care, regardless of their ability to pay.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Delaware Guidance Services for Children & Youth, Inc. (DGS) was founded in September 1953 as the Wilmington Child Guidance Center. The Center was established through the efforts of the Wilmington Junior League and Wilmington Pediatrician Dr. Robert O. Y. Warren The founding Board of Directors was composed of a group of community volunteers, including Junior League members, physicians, clergymen, and professionals,. The agency resided in rent-free quarters in the Sunday School Building of Trinity Episcopal Church, and assembled a qualified staff including a psychiatrist, a psychiatric social worker, a part-time psychologist, and a secretary-bookkeeper. In the first year, 151 cases were treated and a long waiting list developed. DGS has grown from a one-psychiatrist operation in loaned space, to the largest single not-for-profit provider of comprehensive psychiatric services for children and their families in Delaware with a staff of 200, a budget of $12 M, five locations statewide, and over 15,000 children and their families served annually.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
DGS provides services in Wilmington, Newark, Dover, Lewes, and Seaford including: outpatient counseling; psychiatric evaluations and medication management. Additional services include a model community collaborative program that provides constructive intervention for children exposed to violence or other potentially traumatic events and crisis services for children in immediate danger of hurting themselves or others—including 24-hour mobile crisis intervention, community and school crisis intervention, short-term crisis stabilization, and 72-hour crisis bed services. We also provide two therapeutic day schools for children ages 6-14 (Lewes and Dover) that provide mental health services in addition to regular schooling; school counseling services; and intensive outpatient services that provide community-based therapy for higher risk clients where therapists meet with children in their homes, schools, community centers, or places of worship.
Through these services our staff provided over 114,000 treatment sessions to over 15, 000 children and their families in 2013. Comprised of child psychiatrists and psychologists, clinical social workers, master’s level therapists and advanced nurse practitioners, our clinical staff maintains the highest standards of professional conduct and is well-known for keeping abreast of emerging new theories and practices.
In 1976 we became one of the first 10 outpatient mental health organizations in the country to receive accreditation from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and we’ve complied with their standards ever since. Our funding sources, including the Division of Prevention and Behavioral Health Services and all major healthcare insurers, consider us to be at the highest quality level of their provider panels.
